Dig`n IT - Digital Innovation Generating New Information Technology

The Digital Innovation Generating New Information Technology (Dig'n IT) program is aimed at increasing digital literacies and promoting technological careers for middle and high school students. The program is the result of a partnership between the College of Education and the College of Engineering at the University of Idaho with pariticpation by members of North Idaho College and support from local businesses, including . Currently Dig'n IT has two components: the Dig'n IT Internship for high school girls and the Dig'n IT Code Camp for middle school girls.

Dig'n IT Internship

The high school component, termed "Dig'n IT Interns", brings together five high school girls for a summer internship experience focused on technology (June 17-August 2, 2013). Through the internship program, participants become familiar with technologically related careers, local start-up companies focused on technology, and engage in specific uses of technology such as computer coding and programming. These interns work alongside computer science and education faculty members as they navigate the technological resources of the local community in Post Falls, Idaho. Additionally, these interns serve in supporting the middle school component of the program and act as mentors for younger girls.

Dig`n IT Code Camp

Dig`n IT Code Camp is a digital innovation summer camp for Middle School girls, designed to inspire and support interest in technology careers, software development, and related technological activities. It is a week-long, day camp, and will be held at the University of Idaho, Coeur d`Alene, July 22-26, 2013. Activities include programming using the Scratch and Alice programming platforms and career exploration activities with local high tech companies, including presentations and field trips.

Programming activities include designing and writing interactive scenes and games. Participants have the opportunity to generate and incorporate digital media into their projects. The camp includes a closing Showcase Celebration during which the participants demonstrate and explain their final projects to community members.
