For Papers
Design
and test efforts have been traditionally motivated by the probability of
faults. However, in open systems it is extremely difficult, if not
impossible, to predict malicious behavior. As a result it may be
difficult or impossible to predict which portion(s) of software systems
are most vulnerable. Further compounding the problem are the economic
and performance aspects that cannot be overlooked when designing or modifying
software for increased security or survivability: Automation, Efficiency,
Transparency, Scalability, Maintainability, Responsiveness, and Measurability.
As a result, the task of identifying and designing solutions to increase
software system security and survivability is a difficult research problem,
requiring much attention by many researchers from a variety of perspectives.
The
focus of this minitrack is security and survivability in large, non-trivial,
software systems, with an emphasis on the last phases of the four stage
survivability model consisting of Resistance, Recognition, Recovery, and
Adaptation. Papers on Resistance and Recognition that address the
need or capacity for safety critical software systems to “fail-safe” and
“fail-secure” are also desired. Submissions will be sought from researchers
in the area of system survivability, software dependability, computer and
network security, fault-tolerance and intrusion tolerance, and economic
or statistical modeling of secure/survivable systems.
Main
minitrack topics include but are not limited to:
-
System or software survivability
-
Safety critical failure modes
-
Network or system intrusion tolerance
-
Modeling malicious behavior or attacks
-
Mathematical models for verification of
vulnerability to malicious acts
-
Models for measurement, evaluation, or
validation of survivability
-
Software fault tolerance
-
Design for dependability and/or survivability
-
PRA and hybrid fault models accounting
for malicious acts and events

Instructions
for Authors
Submit
an (optional) 300-word abstract to one of the minitrack chairs by March
31, 2002. Feedback on the appropriateness of the abstract will be sent
to you by April 19, 2002. Submit the full manuscript in PDF electronic
format to one of the minitrack chairs by June 1, 2002. Manuscripts
should have an abstract and be 22-25 typewritten, double-spaced pages in
length. Papers must not have been previously presented or published,
nor currently submitted for publication. Each manuscript will be
subjected to a rigorous refereeing process. Final
accepted papers will be no more than 10 pages, double-column, single-spaced.
Individuals interested in refereeing papers are
invited to contact the minitrack chairs.
Submissions must include the names,
complete addresses including affiliations, telephone numbers, and e-mail
addresses of all authors. Authors unable to submit electronic copy
should contact the minitrack chairs prior to submission. For

HICSS conferences are devoted to advances in the
information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both
theory and practice. Invited papers may be theoretical, conceptual, tutorial or
descriptive in nature. Submissions undergo a peer referee process and those
selected for presentation will be published in the Conference Proceedings.
Submissions must not have been previously published.
