A Lawyer's Perspective on Client Confidences/Secrets and Conflicts of Interest

Secrets and conflicts of interest are topics that any CS professional has to deal with sooner or later. Confidentiality is even anchored in common CS definitions, e.g., security, and conflicts of interest or the awareness of conflict of interest are part of our Professional Responsibilities. To no surprise is this reflected in codes like the IEEE Code of Ethics.

Myron Schreck is a Retired Professor of Law at the University Of Idaho College Of Law. He continues to teach on an Adjunct basis. He holds a B.S. of Speech from Northwestern University, a Masters from San Francisco State University, and a Law Degree from the University Of Illinois College Of Law. After law school, he clerked for Justice Edward Howell of the Oregon Supreme Court, and then practiced with the law firm of Black, Tremaine, Higgins, Lankton & Krieger in Portland, Oregon. He began teaching at the University of Idaho College of Law in 1984, covering the following subjects: Professional Responsibility, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Children in the Legal System, Education Law, Local Government and Land Use Law.
