Environmental Monitoring Using Satellite Remote Sensing

Presenter: Paul Gessler, UI

Abstract:

Environmental scientists have nearly a hundred different satellite imaging sensors devoted to mapping and monitoring the earth's surface over a variety of space and time scales. This talk will provide a brief context and then discuss specific applications for both regional forest monitoring and wildlife habitat assessment as well as the challenges for managing very large geospatial databases of imagery. I will conclude by connecting these initiatives to campus, state, and regional cyberinfrastructure planning with opportunities and needs for input and involvement of computer scientists.
