Goofy Glasses are high power LEDs, a radio, and a microprocessor-based
controller attached to sunglasses. These sunglasses can be worn by members
of a musical group (such as a marching band) or other performing group and
the LEDs can be controlled (on/off, color, brightness) via a wireless signal
sent by a transmitter attached to a laptop computer.
Starting with the DMX theatre lighting protocol as a model, we developed an efficient transport method and the hardware to support it. Simple and inexpensive, the RX modules were mostly assembled by students in the Computer Science Department and in the UI Vandal Marching Band. They were first deployed as part of the half-time show at the Homecoming game last fall, and at all the appearances of the Marching Band in the Kibbie Dome since then. The presentation will focus on hardware and software considerations.
