UIdaho Computer Science Colloquium

The cloud is a dangerous and wonderful place
(Best practices and lessons learned from building large-scale, cloud-native services).

Mark Wunsch and Rob Lyon
Kochava

A little over a year ago we partnered with a major telecom provider to build a data processing and analytics platform - in 3 months. The choice was clear, in order to meet the uncertainties, deadlines and handle the volumes of data that we were expecting, the application and services would need to be cloud-native.

We will cover lessons learned and best practices for application design in cloud-native environments, quickly reacting to infrastructure failures and traffic surges, mitigating (or accepting) the risks of single points of failure, cloud specific performance considerations, and deployment strategies in a dynamically scalable environment that handles billions of transactions per day.
