CS570
Aritificial Intelligence
Spring 2012
Graduate Student Paper (For students taking the course as CS570)
Due: At the Final

General: Investigate a modern application of AI.

Length: 3 pages, space and a half, 12-point font, reasonable margins, etc.

References: At least 4, of which at least 3 should be research publications. The other may be supplementary sources, such as a textbook on the topic, magazine articles, etc.

Content: The paper should be a detailed review of a successful, or semi-successful, specific, and practical application of AI. By specific and practical I mean that the paper must be about a particular problem that AI was applied to, with specific reasons for the success or failure of the attempt to use AI. For example, it is not enough to cover the success of fuzzy control systems in general, you must pick a specific problem, for example improving washing machine efficiency and performance, and explain why and how fuzzy control systems were applied to specifically that problem.

Ideally, this application should relate to your graduate research topic (if you have one), or to a research topic you are interested in (if you don't have a topic yet). If you have a major professor feel free to discuss potential topics with them. If you don't have a research topic and/or major professor yet this is an opportunity to talk to faculty about potential topics. The paper should include the follow material:

  1. What is the problem you are discussing.
  2. How was the problem solved in the past.
  3. How AI was applied to the problem. You should be as detailed as possible here. If the problem of automatically reading zip codes on mail was solved using neural networks include as much detail as you can obtain: the type of the neural network, the size of the neural network, how the neural network was trained, etc.
  4. Whether or not in your opinion the attempt was successful.
  5. Why you believe, based on what you've read, the attempt was or was not successful.
  6. Potential next steps, i.e. what approach or changes in the techniques would you propose if you had to solve the problem.
Note that in reading these I will put an emphasis on your analysis of the problem and techniques. Don't just report what you read - form and report your own opinion.
